After having received an occupancy permit, students and teachers moved in our new school at the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year. All existing building codes, provincial, regional, and municipal as the issuing of the occupancy permit would support, are either met or exceeded. The school building consists of classrooms, a library, computer lab, gymnasium, music room, art room, teacher’s lounge, sufficient number of washrooms with non-slip flooring, kitchen, and office space, all of which are distributed between two floors, the main floor and the upper floor. The building, as well as the washrooms on the main floor, is wheelchair accessible and handicapped parking is also provided. There are two sets of stairs, one at each end of the building which are wide and the steps covered with non-slip material. Fire exit doors are clearly marked by exit signs and the doors are equipped with crash bars. All fire codes and specifications for fire separation are met. The entire building is equipped with fire sprinklers and all the rooms and corridors are equipped with fire extinguishers that are inspected regularly by the fire department. The school also added an outside water hydrant. Fire escape routes are familiar to all the teachers as well as students due to frequent fire alarm drills, initiated by the administration or by the local fire department. The fire department has ready access inside the building with a key located outside, close to the front door, as well as floor plans locating mechanical, electrical, and janitorial rooms. No chemicals or flammable materials are stored inside the building. Fire stations and alarm bells are located throughout the building. Heat sensors and smoke alarms, as well as CO2 detectors are constantly monitored. The building has motion detectors, door contacts, and break-in alarm, operated by a security company. The heating and cooling system is provided by four gas roof units. The gas company comes and inspects the furnaces and checks for gas leaks regularly. The electrical power supply also meets all regulations. The climate control throughout the building affords both teachers and students optimal working and learning comfort. All the air coming in is filtered and circulated in large volume, and all the windows can be opened. This greatly diminishes the absenteeism. In summary, the new building meets and exceeds all the various building codes and regulations.
