The size of classes is kept intentionally small: a maximum of about 20 children in each class. In this way, each student can receive individual attention and progress to some extent at his or her own pace, while at the same time reaping the benefits of learning in the company of his or her intellectual and social peers. Every effort is made to create in these small classes a stimulating atmosphere in which learning is enjoyable.
Not only the classes but the school itself is on a human scale. Enrollment over the last decade has fluctuated between 150 and 300 children. The result is that after a few months in the school, a child knows all the teachers and other children. The school thus becomes for the child (and for the parents) not an impersonal, bureaucratic institution but an ongoing human community where one is recognized by name and respected as a unique human being.
