As an independent school, the Kitchener - Waterloo Bilingual School has not had to follow the wide swings in methods of teaching mandated for Ontario’s public and separate schools over the past 25 years. It has instead been free to continue with its conservative, time-honored methods, while at the same time allowing individual teachers to adapt creatively to the pedagogical needs of their particular students. In the typical case, a child learns partially through an individualized program, partially as a member of a small group and partially as a member of the class as a whole. A balance between independent learning and participation in group learning is thereby achieved.
Self-discipline and consideration for others are the corner stones of the school’s approach to the emotional and social development of the child. In this respect as in academic matters, close communication between teachers and parents is encouraged. Parents are always welcome at the school. Parents receive three formal written reports each year detailing the academic, emotional, and social process of their child or children. Two formal parent-teacher interviews are scheduled in the course of each year.
